Funny, witty, and never missing a beat, Michel—played by writer and actor Michael Landes—charms and entertains as he regales us with a firsthand account of his friendship with the mysterious Phantom of the Opera, Erik. The Phantom of the Opera’s Friend is a one-man show directed by Catalina Beltrán, in which Michel captivates the audience for a full 60 minutes without a single pause. We’re all seated in the front row, metaphorically speaking, getting a glimpse into the genius and quirks behind the Phantom’s persona through Michel’s unique lens—as his loyal drinking pal.
Michael Landes brings a breath of fresh air and boundless confidence to Michel. If cool were a cucumber, Landes would be it. He is effortlessly at ease as he guides us through the show, letting us in on inside jokes, clever one-liners, and brilliant impressions—as if speaking directly to the grand Erik himself. We’re never left wondering about this new take on the Phantom; Michel answers all our burning questions.
At one point, Michel recounts his love interest in Sophie and how Erik distracts him with grand, often absurd requests. One such instance includes acquiring over 120 candles to light the “sewer” beneath the stage. Or Erik’s insistence on finding a gondola for the lake below the theater. Erik laments the hours it takes to light each individual candle, revealing his obsessive desires to claim his beloved Christine. Through these recollections, Michel gives us greater insight into the obsessive madness behind Erik’s mask and how, in his isolation, he dares to claim dominion over the opera—while never fully engaging with the world beyond it.
For those of us fascinated by the Phantom, Michel offers a relatable lens—highlighting how friendship with an offbeat soul can present challenges, yet also invite bold, original thinking. The Phantom of the Opera’s Friend is an in-depth exploration of the rich, masterful themes at the heart of the original manuscript. You’re sure to laugh, sigh, and embrace the tenacity and idiosyncrasy of the Phantom—all through the thoughtful reflection of Michel, a friend with a listening ear and unwavering spirit.
